Hugo Romer, an R&D Engineer at Huisman, was awarded the KIVI "Best Master Thesis in Offshore Engineering" award for his thesis “Wire & Arc Additive Manufacturing for Offshore Appliances”.

Romer won the award together with his graduation professor, Professor Kaminski. For his thesis, a heavy crane hook has been manufactured using wire and additive manufacturing, which was subsequently tested on its material qualities, among which strength and fatigue, and the possible anisotropy of the material. The work has been carried out at Huisman, partly in Schiedam and partly in the Czech Republic.

KIVI Graduation Prize

The KIVI section Offshore Engineering awarded its annual graduation prize to the best master graduate in an offshore engineering related topic in 2017 on 20 September. KIVI, the Royal Dutch Institute of Engineers, established this prize for students years ago to

  • accentuate the importance of research in Offshore Technology,
  • inform the industry and society about results of graduation projects,
  • stimulate the Offshore Engineering study and high-quality graduation theses; and
  • strengthen the connection between students and KIVI.

The theses are judged by a board of very experienced representatives of the offshore industry and universities.

The MSc Award ceremony will be followed by a similar ceremony on Thursday 15 November 2018, at the HZ University of Applied Sciences in Vlissingen, for the best student at bachelor level.
