Rederij Doeksen's new ferries ms Willem Barentsz and Willem de Vlamingh were both christened and launched in Vung Tau, Vietnam, last week.

The Willem de Vlamingh was the first to launch on 19 January after a sober christening ceremony performed by Christine Doeksen-van Galen Last, wife of Jan Willem Doeksen, CEO of Koninklijke Doeksen. The Willem Barentsz followed on the 22 January. The latter was christened by mrs Brigitte Bijen, partner of director Paul Melles.

Both vessels are now being outfitted and at the end of February the two new LNG catamarans will be put on transport to the Netherlands by heavy cargo vessel. The voyage will take place via Cape of Good Hope and will take about eight weeks.

LNG Catamarans

In 2016 Rederij Doeksen commissioned the Australian company Strategic Marine to build two new catamarans, which will sail on LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) in the Wadden Sea. Design agency Vripack from Sneek designed the interior and exterior. The new ships are equipped with innovative applications that make the ships much more economical and substantially cleaner than regular ferries.

After the ships have arrived in Harlingen, they will be prepared for commissioning. The new ships will take over the timetable from mid-September.
