Inland navigation vessel Sendo Liner, trailing suction hopper dredger DC Orisant and superyacht Bravo Eugenia will compete for this year's title of KNVTS Ship of the Year. The jury will judge the vessels on design, economics, sustainability and environment, safety and building process.

The three nominees were selected from five entries. In September, the companies behind the nominated entries will present their ship to the jury. 'The nominated ships each distinguish themselves on their own specific aspects and that does not make the final selection process any easier,' says jury chairman Rien de Meij. 'Experience shows that the presentations by the nominated companies can play a decisive role in the final jury decision.'

The nominees are (in random order):

  • Sendo Liner: The barge Sendo Liner, has been designed and built by Concordia Damen Shipbuilding BV in Werkendam, The Netherlands. The vessel has been equipped with batteries that allow emission free sailing. In addition, by creating a smart design, the vessel can transport an extra layer of containers compared with similar vessels.
  • DC Orisant: Trailing suction hopper dredger DC Orisant has been designed and built by Royal IHC in Krimpen aan den IJssel, the Netherlands. The dredging installation has been configured to dredge marine aggregates for the construction industry. Yet, the vessel can also be deployed for regular dredging project and offshore support tasks thanks to its DP2 functionality. t is the first diesel-electric aggregate dredger on the market, which enables it to sail at the most economical speed in all situations.
  • Bravo Eugenia: Motor yacht Bravo Eugenia has been designed and built by Oceanco in Alblasserdam, the Netherlands. This 109-metre luxury yacht has a sleek look and a gross tonnage of 3418, which is low considering yachts of similar size. The vessel features hybrid diesel-electric propulsion and includes a battery bank enabling emission free operation and makes use of waste heat recovery. Due to the smaller engines, a single-layer engine room has been realised, leaving more room for accommodation.

KNVTS Ship of the Year

The KNVTS (Royal Netherlands Society of Maritime Engineers) promotes the dissemination of technical knowledge within the maritime sector and stimulates innovation, development and education. The KNVTS is also a partner of the Schip en Werf de Zee Foundation, the publisher of SWZ|Maritime. On the occasion of its 100th anniversary in May 1998, the KNVTS established the "KNVTS Ship of the Year Award" to promote technical innovations in the Dutch shipbuilding industry. Ships eligible for this award have to have been developed in the Netherlands, particularly concerning their innovative aspects and have preferably been built or largely been outfitted there as well. For this year's award, the ship has to have been delivered between 1 May 2018 and 30 April 2019. It is the 22nd time the award will be presented.

The winner will be announced at the Maritime Awards Gala on 4 November.
