On behalf of Aibel, Heerema’s heavy lift vessel Sleipnir has executed the inshore integration lifts for Equinor’s Johan Sverdrup P2 topsides at the GMC yard in Gismarvik, Norway. Before that, the platform had been transported from Thailand to Norway by heavy lift vessel GPO Sapphire.

The Johan Sverdrup Process Platform II, or just P2, consists of three parts and the contract for its construction was awarded to Aibel Thailand in April 2018. The largest of the three, the Main Support Frame (MSF) is the largest platform module ever built on Thai soil. It was built at Aibel’s yard in Laem Chabang and at subcontractor Deeline in Rayong, Thailand.

The project also set a new record for the heaviest lift performed at Aibel Thailand, and the load-out of the completed module was the largest land transport ever completed in Thailand, using 604 axle lines. On 7 April, the MSF was loaded onto the GPO Sapphire for transport to Norway. The transport arrived at Gismarvik on 11 May.

Integration of modules

The other two modules are the utility process module (UPM) and converter module (HVDC). The UPM was built at the Aibel yard in Haugesund and the converter module is partly built by partner Navantia in Spain and at the yard in Haugesund.

The Sleipnir was called in to execute the inshore integration of the three modules. In the video below, the Sleipnir can be seen lifting the 13,500-metric-tonne MSF.

The complete platform is scheduled for final delivery to client Equinor in early 2022. The P2 platform is to increase the production from the Johan Sverdrup field from 440,000 barrels to 660,000 barrels a day.
